Dr. Jean Pierre Barral is the founder of this osteopathic technique which is now taught all over the world. The purpose of his work is to “re-create, harmonize, and increase proprioceptive communication in the body to enhance its internal mechanism for better health, thereby revitalizing a person, and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture.” Visceral manipulation treatments are designed "to improve a person's functional and structural imbalances with an aim to affect their musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive, and lymphatic dysfunction.”

Visceral manipulation (VM) (aka visceral massage) is a gentle hands-on osteopathic therapy that focuses on improving mobility of the organs in your abdomen. Chronic pulling or immobility of the organs can create strain on the skeletal system causing things like lower back pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, reflux, hiatal hernias, constipation, bloating and more. The goal of this technique is to decrease tension, improve connective tissue mobility, and encourage better digestive function.

Visceral manipulation can be an integral part of treatment for the following conditions:

  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Neck pain
  • Rib cage pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Hip pain
  • Frozen shoulder
